Message of Professor Ajeet Narain Mathur,
Director, IAMR
The Year 2008 marks the
silver jubilee of the National Technical Manpower Information
System at the Institute of Applied Manpower Research, its Lead
Centre. There are 20 nodal centres all over the country where
primary data is regularly collected and collated from from
industrial establishments, education and training institutions
and technical professionals themselves. The information compiled
is analysed and periodic reports released for all States and
Union territories of India making this the most comprehensive
coverage of professionals in the Country.
This goldmine of a database
enables India know where its technical and professional manpower
work, how their careers progress, whether they secure decent
terms and conditions, the extent to which job requirements of
different profiles are served by the supply parameters of
educational and training institutions, curricular shortcomings
and mismatches that need interventions, how institutions rank
within their respective specialisations, short-term and
long-term anticipations of shortages and surpluses, adjustments
needed in educational planning and labour markets, and a lot
more.
Until 2001-02, NTMIS
covered only engineering manpower but we have since expanded to
cover management, hotel, catering, pharmacy professionals also.
The next stage would be to expand into life sciences,
biotechnology professionals, and a host of other R&D
professionals across institutions and establishments.
The NTMIS system is being
restructured to enable its inquiry frame become more relevant
and its timely outputs available to industrial establishments,
education and training institutions, technical and professional
graduates of the country, policy researchers, career-guidance
counsellors, and planners in education and employment.
